Get help on time
by 28-year-old woman
My 21 yr. old brother committed suicide in May 94. I was very close to him,
as were my children. My brother was always depressed even as a very young child.
Manic depression runs in my family on my mother's side. Three of her father's brothers
committed suicide. Her father didn't kill himself, but he was on Lithium, when he would
take it. She always says her father was miserable and she and mother and siblings were
as well. Alcoholism also runs in my family on both my mother and fathers sides.
I have been completely lost without my brother, I feel like I don't have anybody to
talk to now. Anyway, my mother always denied that my brother could also be manic-depressive.
She got very religious a few years ago, and when I would bring up the possibility of him being
manic, and needing medications, she would say, "Oh all he needs is God!" This infuriates
me; my brother is dead now!
